The bottom of the list is populated by possession-based receivers who perform better on intermediate and short routes than those in deep areas, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a great sleeper pick this year as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are expected to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler is likely to excel on short-to-mid routes, given that's exactly the way he performed in 2021 while playing for the Bills. He could be an excellent replacement for the former wideout Jordan Matthews.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot The proportion of snaps receivers take in the slot could be a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It's not always a true reflection of a receiver’s skill set, as certain receivers are better in the slot, but they can't play deeper. He logged 74% of his route in the slot, as opposed to only 26% of his boundaries routes. This is an enormous difference and shows just how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he's aligned with the slot. Speed receivers are more efficient when they align inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-1 coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list. McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also part of this group. Both have been able to generate pressures in the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the highest tackle stop rate on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by placing his slot for nickel and dime packages, and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot. Percentage of Snaps Outside While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers with a high slot grade score touchdowns in the same way as those on the outside. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers. It's therefore interesting to see a receiver like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets, and flanker in 2 of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than a lot of the players on this list. This is a great method to gain matchup advantages for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system. He also plays the X-position and makes huge plays on the outside. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this ranking but he's a very high-graded receiver and is a great match for the Cowboys' scheme. Mecole Hardman is another example of a player who's capable of putting up big numbers on both kinds of targets. He is one of the best players in the game at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a great catcher who is contested. Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him an important part of his team's defensive line. He has struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety players who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size or route-running abilities. |
