Treatment For ADHD

Psychosocial therapy is the most common treatment for adding. The medications can include stimulants such as methylphenidate and amphetamine, and non-stimulants like atomoxetine and clonidine, guanfacine and viloxazine.

The use of stimulants should not be used in patients who have active substance abuse problems but they can be considered in those who are in stable remission. Combination therapy with antidepressants (particularly SSRIs) is also an option.

Stimulant medicines are used for around 70 to 80 percent of adults and children with ADHD. Most children and young people find that their symptoms improve when they receive treatment. This is particularly relevant for children with teachers, parents, or carers who can report improvements.

Early use of stimulants can reduce the risk of substance use disorders later on in life. Wilens and colleagues79,80 Katusic as well as colleagues81,82 and Biederman and colleagues83 discovered that treatment with stimulants reduces the risk for substance use disorders during adolescence, however the protective effect diminishes as we enter early adulthood.
