Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob

There's nothing more frustrating than getting in your vehicle after a long day and realizing that the key fob battery is dead. This is a simple fix that is easily done at a big box retailer or at a hardware store.

Incorporating a spare key fob to your Mazda 3 can be an inexpensive way to save yourself from the hassle of being transported to a dealership and having them re-program your keys.

Battery Replacement

You can replace the battery on your Mazda 3 keyfob at home. You should only replace it if the battery fails or you see a message saying "Low keyfob battery" on the multi-information display. Replace battery."

You'll need a flathead screwdriver with tape and patience to open the case. Find a gap or notch in the bottom metal part of the Mazda 3's key fob and then insert the tip of the screwdriver into it to pry off the lower half. Repeat the process for the top metal piece but be careful not to damage the rubber ring on the bottom of the case.

You'll find a slot on both sides of the fob case that houses the battery. Use the tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver to gently pry open the case, starting with one side and moving to the next. Take out the old CR2025 and replace it with a new one, making sure to put it on its face to ensure the correct direction of polarity. Finally, place the battery cap back on and reconnect both sides of the key fob's case, pressing until you can hear them click.

After you've replaced the battery check the fob to verify that it functions by locking and unlocking your doors. If everything appears to be working the Mazda 3 remote features can be used again.

Pairing Issues

If your key fob has stopped suddenly it could be because the transmitter inside the car is damaged. It is typically a need for the assistance of a professional for repair and may require a new replacement key fob.

If you've tried replacing the battery and reprogramming the key fob, but did not resolve the issue it is possible the chip inside the key fob might be damaged. This could happen if the key fob was dropped on hard surfaces, exposed to salt water, or even touched by dirty hands.

To identify the issue, you will need to locate a tiny "key" located in the seam of the fob that lets you lift it open and remove the circuit board. You will then be able to look for any corrosion or damage on the chip. To prevent damaging the chip, it is recommended to clean the chip with a new paper towel.

It is also possible to take a closer look at the battery connector's terminals to check if they're damaged or cracked. If this is the case, carefully attaching them back can usually restore the function of the key fob. You can also check the buttons for wear or damage. If they are loose, they can be soldered back into place, unless one has physically snapped.

There's nothing more difficult than trying to start your car and seeing the message "No Fob Detected". It happens at the worst time, for instance when you're running late to work or pick up your children from school or daycare. The good thing is that there are steps you can follow to resolve the issue and figure out the root of the problem.

Interference signals can disrupt the remote key fob's signal from the vehicle making it unable to work correctly. This can be caused by things like weather conditions, buildings, and transmitters that operate on the same frequency. Interference can occur if your vehicle is equipped with aftermarket equipment that transmits at the same frequency as your key fob.

The key fob can also be damaged if exposed to salt water or water. Water can get into the rubber seals of the electronic chip, especially in the event that the key fob is submerged in water for an extended period of time. The chip may stop working and may require replacement of the keyfob. If you have a programmable key, you can clean the chip with isopropyl Alcohol or an electronic cleaner to help it come back to normal. If this doesn't work the chip, it's likely to be fried and will require to be replaced.

Locking/unlocking the Doors

The buttons on the key fob transmit electronic signals to the solenoid inside the car, which converts the signal into a mechanical action that locks and unlocks the doors. If your door lock does not work it could be due to an issue with the solenoid. This requires experts from repair shops to look into.

A low-voltage battery can cause the fob to stop functioning correctly. This can occur if your battery is not charged or if the contacts are damaged. The good news is that a new battery is able to fix this problem in just minutes.

If the key fob doesn't work after you replace the battery or re-program it the issue could be related to the receiver module. The device receives radio frequency signals from the key fob and interprets them to control the vehicle's functions. If it breaks down it could be costly to repair.

To determine whether this is the case, start by inserting the spare key into the key slot and turning the ignition to ON. Press the key fob twice for 10 seconds without taking it out. The Mazda 3 system will now connect the key to the car, and you can use it as your primary remote for driving. This lets you program up to three keys.
