For a number of Kia models, the key contains a keyless entry system built-in. The key is usually akin to an electronic remote and can be changed by a new one purchased from an Kia dealer or locksmith.

Key fobs can fail to function due to a variety of reasons, including the battery being dead, worn-out buttons signal interference, or water damage. Here are some suggestions to help you get your Kia sportage replacement key working again.

How to replace the remote key or smartkey

The battery inside your Kia's smart key will eventually need to be replaced, whether it is a remote key, a push-to-start key or a regular key that doesn't have a transponder. This is particularly when your car displays a message that indicates the remote or smart keys have low battery power.

It's a simple process. To replace the battery of the keyfob, remove your mechanical key from the slit on the back of the fob. Then, pull the cover open. Inside the key fob, there will be an incredibly small screw that holds the battery in its place. Take out the old battery by detaching the screw with the help of a small screwdriver. Then, you can insert the new battery and close the slit in the key fob.

Test the key fob by pressing the lock/unlock buttons. If the doors unlock and lock according to your expectations, then you're good to go! You can now use the hands-free lock/unlock feature on your Kia when your fingers are cold or you have to run some errands in Brandon.

Not all key fobs may need to be programmed (transponder chips or smart keys). This requires a specific programming machine that only the dealer or locksmith can access. Other keys (non transponder metal keys) do not require programming. If you want to change the programming of your key, you'll have to note the key code's number on the tag for the key code.

How do you replace a dead battery?

Remove the old battery and then place the new battery to ensure its "+" side faces you, and the "-", negative side is facing the fob's electrical contacts. Avoid using too much force when pushing the new CR2032 into place to avoid damaging or bending the metal contacts.

Once the new battery has been installed after which you turn the key fob off and back on in the ignition several times until the door locks cycle. You can then test the Kia's key fob to ensure it's functioning properly.

How to replace the smart key

You may have either the standard keyfob or Smart Key depending on the model of Kia Sportage. The difference between the two is that the smart key comes with a small mechanical key blade that is hidden inside, while the standard key fob does not. Both types of key fobs are equipped with an internal battery that will eventually need to be replaced. Fortunately, this is quite simple and only takes about two minutes.

Be sure to switch off your Kia and sit on a flat or well-lit surface prior to when you begin. Be aware that the fob is made up of small parts that can be thrown off if you're not careful.

The release button for the small size is located on the lower backside. It could be an oval or circular slot. After pressing this button, the mechanical key blade will come out and you will be able to open the key fob.

After the key fob has been open, remove the battery. The new battery is a one called CR-2032 and can be bought through the internet or at a local auto parts shop. When you are done with the battery, you should be able to lock, unlock and start your vehicle using your key fob even if the engine isn't running!

How do you replace the mechanical key

The Kia keyfob can be a fantastic convenience that lets us lock or unlock our car with just pressing one button. But like any device it may have issues at times. There are solutions to fix these problems and keep your key fobs functioning for many years.

A dead or low-quality battery is one of the most frequent problems. The battery could cause the device to stop working or work intermittently. If this is the problem it is time to replace the battery an entirely new battery.

If this doesn't solve the problem you can try using a standard flat-head screwdriver to break open the fob's plastic casing. Be sure not to damage any internal components, or scratch the plastic. Once open, carefully remove the old battery and replace it with a new one.
