Different Types of Mazda Replacement Keys There are many ways you can replace your Mazda key in the event of its malfunction or you lose it. Some are easier and cheaper than others. A locksmith can duplicate and reprogram a chipped car key on-site. A dealership might be able do this as well. Transponder Keys If you own a vehicle that was manufactured within the past 20 years, it is almost certain that your key has transponder chips in it. These chips are used as an additional security feature for your vehicle to protect theft. The engine control unit sends it a coded message whenever you put the transponder key in the ignition. If the code matches, your vehicle will begin to move. The benefit of a transponder key is that it can't be duplicated by most duplicators. However this doesn't mean it is completely safe from thieves. There are plenty of ways for a skilled thief to wire a vehicle with an embedded transponder chip. Transponder keys can be slightly more expensive than other types of replacement keys, but they come with more security and features. It could be worthwhile to stop your car from being stolen. Visit an auto locksmith, or a local shop offering the service of cloning keys to obtain an additional key. You can also program the chip with an extensive owner's manual. If you choose to do this, make sure you use a top quality key copy. If you use a cheaper key, it can damage the transponder chip inside and cause your vehicle to not start. Mechanical Keys If you think of a mechanical key you may think of the classic IBM Model M keyboard switch. These switches have stems which hold keys in place and a spring. This is the reason why the switches feel good when you press the keycap. The keycaps themselves have flat tops and are usually rounded or have ridges. When people talk about getting the "feel" of their keyboards, they are referring to the keys. Mazda's key system is fitted with a number of security features to prevent theft. Remote Control Keys Certain models of mazda keys have the remote device integrated into the key's head which makes it a dual-purpose device. This type of key can provide an additional layer of security to the vehicle, as it stops thieves from stealing the flat metal key. In addition to serving as an effective deterrent to thieves this type of Mazda key can also control the car's power windows as well as its panoramic roof*, depending on the model. The Red Key allows car owners to restrict certain features like the maximum speed and loudspeaker volume. If you put a Mazda key in your car, it will stop the engine and trigger the alarm.
