Slot Rankings - How Wide Receivers Score More Touchdowns in the Slot Slots are the same for every spin. You won't find any tricks to aid you in beating them. There are a few tricks you can use to maximize your chances of winning. The first step is to check a game's RTP. This is a measure of how much players can expect to win in the long run. Slot Efficiency The goal of slot efficiency is to maximize the amount of changes that can be made without violating a predefined set of constraints. These two are likely to see a boost in their targets this season if the Bucs move them into the slot more frequently however, they'll have to improve their perimeter scoring to keep that high level. The slot is the best option for wideouts that are quick, as they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only wide receiver who isn't speedy on the list who benefits from slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes. The last spot on the list is populated by possession-based receivers who perform better on short and intermediate routes than deep ones, such as Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good sleeper pick this year, as he'll be the primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler is expected to be a natural on short-to-mid-long and intermediate routes, since this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. He could be an excellent replacement for the departed wideout Jordan Matthews. Percentage of Snaps in the Slot The percentage of snaps that receivers take in the slot can be a good indicator for their ability to run routes deep. It is not always an accurate reflection of a receiver’s skill set since certain receivers are better in the slot but don't play deeper. For example for instance, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) however, he is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that most of his targets are from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on an open, deep route. On the other hand, certain receivers excel in playing inside and can't do much on the outside. For instance the Panthers gave Robby Anderson 978 snaps this season, and he completed 74 percent of his slot routes compared to just 26% on boundary routes. This is a huge difference that shows how much more productive Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot. Chris Godwin, a Buccaneers player, plays inside the majority of the time on his passing downs and is among the top five slot receiving scores (58.5). However he also ran 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season and is a stud in one-on-one coverage. Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and often face one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper in the top five on our list. On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles having seven, and Moore is the most effective tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Through using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside in base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his skills. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is a huge advantage when playing the slot. Percentage of Snaps Outside While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are equally good. Wide receivers who have a high slot grade have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the outside. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends. It's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in 3 WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. Lamb is running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this list. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team. It also helps to explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season. Mecole Hardman, a different player who can put up big numbers with both types of targets, is a different example. He's among the best players in the league at throwing throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a fantastic catcher who is contested. Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent his defensive snaps so far this season. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-best EPA for run stops among cornerbacks who play in the slot. This makes him an important member of his team's defensive unit. On the other hand, he's had trouble to block passes from the outside and has allowed a negative EPA against these kinds of targets. This is due to him playing with safety and linebackers who can't compete with Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes. |
