Speedy wideouts are the main benefit of moving into the slot, since they are more likely to be open downfield when their route isn't covered by a linebacker or cornerback. Corey Coleman is the only wide receiver who isn't a fast wideout, but could benefit from more slot work. He's a good target for intermediate and short routes. This is a huge distinction and demonstrates how much more productive Anderson is when aligned to the slot. Moreover, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However he also played 51 percent of his perimeter routes in the last season, and is a star in one-on-one coverage. Speed receivers tend to be more effective when they are lined up inside. They can be targeted further down the field, and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. There are names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five. On the other hand, we've got some great slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. Both have been able create pressures during the passing game with McDuffie leading the NFL with seven forced fumbles and Moore having the best tackle stop performance on this list (-3.5). Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting his slot for nickel and dime packages, and then moving him to the outside while playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot. Percentage of Snaps Outside While top NFL receivers like Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter, their slot counterparts are just as effective. Wide receivers who have high slot grades score touchdowns in the same way as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like tight ends and backfield passers. That's why it's interesting to see a receiver such as CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 because he plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. He's running more routes in the slot than many of the players on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to create matchup advantages for your team and explain why Lamb ranks as the highest-graded slot receiver in our system this season. Of course, he also plays the X position and makes huge plays from the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as awe-inspiring as the players in this list but he's a very high-graded receiver and is an excellent player for the Cowboys scheme. Mecole Hardman, a different player who is able to put up big numbers with both types of targets is another example. He has a high slot receiving grade and is one of the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable player for contested-catch. Another player on this list who's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA among cornerbacks who are aligned in the slot, making him an important player in the defense of his team. On the other hand, he's had trouble to stop passes from the outside and has been able to give a negative EPA against these types of targets. This is the result of playing alongside unsafe linebackers who aren't able to match Hilton's size, speed and route-running ability. |
