Moreover it is worth noting that the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs, and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is an expert in one-on-one coverage. Speed receivers are more effective when lined up inside, since they are able to be targeted down the field, and often have one-on-one coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, and Julio Jones in our top five. On the flip side there are some excellent slot cornerbacks like McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the leader in the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore is the most effective tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Through using McDuffie in the slot when they are running nickel or dime-type packages, and then placing him on the outside of base defense, Spagnuolo has maximized his capabilities. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is a major advantage when playing the slot. Percentage of Snaps Outside While top NFL receivers such as Golden Tate, Larry Fitzgerald and Baldwin excel on the perimeter but their slot counterparts are also equally good. Wide receivers with high slot grades have touchdowns that are about the same as those on the perimeter. This is mainly because quarterbacks are more consistent with their targets when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers than other inside options such as tight ends and backfield passers. That's why it's interesting to see a player like CeeDee Lamb on this list in 2022 since he plays slot in three WR sets, and flanker in two of the sets. In actuality the slot receiver is running a higher number of routes in the slot than most of the players listed on this chart. This is an excellent opportunity to increase matchup benefits for your team. It also helps explain why Lamb is the highest-graded receiver in our system. Of course, he plays the X position and makes huge plays on the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as powerful as the players in this list, but he's still a very high-graded receiver and is a perfect player for the Cowboys' scheme. Mecole Hardman is a further example of a player capable of posting big numbers on both kinds of targets. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the best players in the league at catching back-shoulder throws however, he's also a formidable contested-catch threat. Jalen Hilton is another player who is slot specialist. He has lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps to date. He has the third-lowest EPA for targets and the fifth-highest EPA for runs stopped among cornerbacks in the slot. This makes him a valuable part of his team's defensive unit. He's struggled to stop passes from outside, and his EPA against this type of target is negative. This is due to him playing with linebackers and safety who can't match Hilton's speed, size, and ability to run routes. |
