Having the right man down alarm in place helps ensure help can be called as quickly as possible after an accident. This can be particularly crucial for certain roles where employees could fall from height, or if they are trapped underneath equipment and need to call for assistance. A quick response to these situations could mean the difference between life or death for a lone worker.

A Man Down Alarm is a lone worker device feature that automatically detects when the wearer has lost control of their body and is no longer moving, such as if they are unconscious or badly injured after falling over. Using sensors and software, the device is programmed to identify any lack of movement or a change in vertical position that indicates the wearer may have fallen over. The device will then trigger a pre-alert, which will vibrate and beep to try and gain the lone worker’s attention and warn them that if they don’t start moving again, the device will activate a Man Down Alarm (known at SoloProtect as an Incapacitation Alert).

The device can then be connected to an operator in our monitoring centre via a 2-way audio call. https://maps.app.goo.gl/MHxvtbUCTkeCeFN28 The operator will ask the lone worker questions to establish their condition and determine whether or not they are seriously injured and need immediate assistance. The operator will then follow the lone workers escalation procedure and dispatch emergency services or call a designated contact for assistance, giving them the radio ID/name of the worker to make this process quicker and more efficient.

Man down alarms can also be helpful for lone workers who have medical conditions such as heart problems or epilepsy, where an incident can happen at any time. These types of workers are at a higher risk of a fall or injury and need to be able to call for help if they have a fit, or if their symptoms get worse and cause them to lose control.

When you combine a Man Down Alarm with a device that has other safety features such as an SOS button, checking in at set intervals or High Risk mode, it can provide a comprehensive lone worker solution. This will allow the user to request help through their 'Help' button, check in at set intervals to inform supervisors they are safe and use 'High Risk' to activate extra functionality that will ensure someone can be notified if they can’t respond to an alarm or don’t answer.
